Gujarat government announced a ₹124 crore financial aid to onion-growing farmers in the state who sold their rabi crop between April-May 2025 at low prices to Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs).
The aid is expected to benefit 90,000 farmers who grow both red and white varieties of onion. In order to counter the low onion prices prevailing in the market, farmers who sold their rabi crop between April 1 and May 31 to APMCs will be given assistance of ₹200 per quintal. This assistance will however be limited to 250 quintals or ₹50,000 per farmer.
The government stated that during the 2024-25 rabi season, the sowing of onion crop was higher than the average sowing and this resulted in onion production of an estimated 249 lakh quintals. The subsequent influx of the crop into APMCs caused the prices to dip and the farmers struggled to recover the production costs, the government said, adding that the aid was being given as the Price Differential Component of Government of India’s Market Intervention Scheme (MIS).
