Maharashtra’s final pulses sowing report for the kharif 2025–26 season shows a mixed trend, with key crops performing unevenly against the state’s five-year averages. Data from the Maharashtra agriculture department indicate that while some pulse crops have expanded their acreage, others have seen a sharp decline due to erratic rainfall and shifting farmer preferences.
Tur (pigeon pea), Maharashtra’s major Kharif pulse, has been sown on 12,26,440 hectares — 96 per cent of the five-year average and almost equal to last year’s acreage. The stable coverage shows that farmers continue to rely on tur despite monsoon and market uncertainties, though officials point out that there has been no significant rise in its cultivation in recent years despite price fluctuations.
Moong (green gram) has recorded a noticeable fall, with sowing at 2,11,318 hectares, amounting to 70 per cent of the five-year average and 89 per cent of last year’s acreage. The decline reflects reduced farmer confidence in the crop.
