Despite a jump of over 136 per cent in urea imports during April-October and sales almost at par with the previous year, farmers’ complaints about shortages continue as stock has dropped to 4.99 million tonnes (mt) as of November 28, compared to 6.6 mt a year-ago. However, industry leaders maintain that the availability is adequate to meet the demand of current Rabi season.
India’s fertilizer imports are projected to jump 41 per cent to 22.3 mt in 2025-26 fiscal due to a surge in domestic demand following good monsoon rains. The Fertilizer Association of India (FAI) said that the maximum demand has been seen in urea. Urea imports were 5.86 mt during April-October, up from 2.48 mt year-ago, FAI Chairman S Shankarsubramanian told media on the eve of the association’s three-day annual seminar.
