India, which dominates the global turmeric market with a share of about 70 per cent, is facing tough competition from Vietnam, Myanmar and some African countries, which are trying to catch up with the country very fast.
“We need to improve the quality of turmeric to meet global standards. Our turmeric is facing stiff competition from Vietnam, Myanmar and some African countries. There is a need to focus on how to increase curcumin content and decrease the moisture level to below 10 per cent,” N Bhavani Sri, Secretary of the National Turmeric Board, has said.
Addressing the maiden Turmeric Value Chain Summit 2025 here on Tuesday, she said that top exporters were eager “to export as much as we can provide, but they are specifically requesting quality seed material grown using Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). While the produce doesn’t necessarily have to be organic, it must utilise integrated pest management techniques that meet global standards.”
