Farmers have started taking decisions related to farming on the government’s weather forecasts as accuracy has increased after using Artificial Intelligence, said Union Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi. The government now plans to incorporate more areas such as market prices and arrivals in the advisories to help improve the decision-making capabilities of farmers.
Addressing a session at the India AI Impact Summit, Chaturvedi said: “We used the 100 years data of India Meteorological Department, which Google CEO earlier mentioned about predicting weather, on a model to predict monsoon for next one week, and one month. Those predictions were fairly accurate.
“We received feedback that farmers took their decisions on sowing and irrigation based on those predictive model’s forecasts. Now. we will expand these forecasts to include advisories on market situation, weather situations to help improve the decision-making capacities of farmers. This will help them to raise productivity and reduce costs.
