September 2026 was the second hottest month on record globally, with temperatures 1.63°C above pre-industrial levels.

Strengthening El Niño conditions pushed sea surface temperatures to record levels, while Antarctic sea ice wintered at its third-lowest maximum.

The latest data from Copernicus Climate Change Services, implemented by the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), show intensifying climate extremes, with global temperatures forecast to remain above the 1.5°C threshold into 2027.
